This thesis explores aixin neither as a unique cultural phenomenon nor as a pure moral structure, but first as the “affective elements of social consciousness” and then as a set of practice that is integral and indispensable to the neoliberal experiment in China.

Neoliberal market reform, without a doubt, produces rational, utilitarian, and instrumentalist subjects. But meanwhile, I argue that under specific circumstances neoliberalization may simultaneously posit compassionate, altruistic, and empathetic self at the center of its social and moral universe. As a social form, neoliberalism contains practices that appear as oppositional and yet get folded into a single order.

    Greeting from Chicago.
I believe i encountered your profile at Douban. I am currently doing media studies at Northwestern. This project of yours seems very interesting, I wish you could talk about it more.

I wonder whether you have read this one http://www.textandideology.net/wordpress/?p=21
I have certain reservations about what it argues. But thought it may bear some relevance to your project?
